A comprehensive plan to update Buchannon Street has been in place for over 25 years, and the city has had a scheduled plan for the last five years. The project will cost $1.7 million, with the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) providing 80% of the funding. The project was set to begin three years ago, but budget and time constraints forced the West Buchanan Project to be implemented into phases.
The first construction phase was near Washington High School, including South Avenue E and Sitler Drive. Several lots in the business park were also acquired during phase one. Phase two takes place on the business park’s far west side generating eight additional industrial-zone lots for future purchase. Construction is currently underway along the cemetery, which will connect to the Washington Business Park and Highway 1. Paving, storm intakes, curbs, and a comprehensive trail system are all being worked on in addition to these primary aspects. The extensive trail system will hopefully connect to the Kewash Trail.
Washington Mayor Jaron Rosien spoke with KCII about why these unwanted delays were ultimately necessary. “I hate when projects are delayed, but due to cost, we did the projects in phases so we could keep our tax levy reasonable and not overburden the taxpayer. The thing is that we have to do these big projects, and then we have to sometimes adapt in order to do them responsibly.”
When the project is completed, it is believed that the new West Buchannon Street will save commuters a substantial amount of time.
