At the Saturday 8-man high school football showcase at Martensdale-St. Mary’s High School, it was the No. 9 ranked Winfield-Mt. Union Wolves that stole the show with a 68-36 thrashing of No. 6 Audubon. WMU posted a first quarter touchdown and a two point conversion, holding that 8-0 lead after one frame. Audubon came to life in the second with 24 points, while the Wolves managed a pair of scores, leaving WMU looking up at the Wheelers 24-22 at the break. After intermission it was all Wolves, they outscored Audubon 46-12 after half including 16-0 in the third quarter to run away for the win.

The Wolves outgained the Wheelers 500-162 in total yards including 392-106 on the ground. Cam Buffington carried the ball 25 times for 273 yards and five touchdowns. Abram Edwards also added a rushing score. Cole Milks was efficient through the air going eight of 13 for 110 yards and a touchdown, a 51 yard strike to Edwards. The Wolves defense was led by Buffington’s 11 tackles. Cam and Cooper Buffington each had an interception. Caleb Giese blocked a punt on special teams for a safety.

With the win, WMU stands at 1-0 on the season, with a trip to Moravia coming Friday.
