Southeast Iowa historian Michael Zahs has a chartered bus tour in Louisa County scheduled  Sunday, August 28th from 1-6p.m.
The starting location is  the Ainsworth Community Center Opera House. The tour, covering the 1830’s to  present, will include cemeteries, significant Civil War sites, Burris City, one of the largest towns in Iowa to completely disappear, as well as other historically significant locations.

Zahs shares that part of the tour will include the Mississippi River, “The Burris family were land speculators. There were three brothers, and at one time they owned much of Louisa and Washington County. Some of them are buried at Woodlawn Cemetery here in Washington but Burris City was one of their largest endeavors and I’ll try to bring that to life a little bit and if everything goes unless we’re having pouring down rain, we’ll be standing right on the bank of the Mississippi River when we talk about that.”

Cost for the event is $65 per person and all proceeds go to the Ainsworth Community Center Opera House. For more details call Sherrie Hazen-Hansen at 319-657-3782 or Zahs at 319-653-6250.
