If you like scoring, look no further than the offensive slugfest that played out in Moravia on Friday with the Winfield-Mt. Union football team finishing on the right side of a 64-50 showdown with the Mohawks.
The Wolves settled in early when Abram Edwards and Cam Buffington each had touchdown runs of 30 and 41 yards to take a 14-0 advantage. The big play Mohawk offense went to work by scoring the next three touchdowns and leading 20-14 after one. A back and forth trend played out in the second with the Wolves having a slight 36-34 lead at the break. WMU got some breathing room in the third when Edwards and Buffington had rushing scores and David Garcia recorded a pick six to make it 58-34. A couple late Moravia touchdowns made the final score closer, but a Cole Milks 19 yard house call shut the door on the comeback.
Through two games, Buffington already has 12 touchdowns with the junior on Friday having four rushing on 16 carries for 239 yards and he had a receiving score from Milks. Edwards toted the rock nine times for 88 yards and reached pay dirt twice. Buffington led the defense with 11.5 tackles and Isaac Wilson had a sack. The Mohawks wanted to air it out deep with quarterback Shane Helmick finishing 17 of 33 for 311 yards and five touchdowns. WMU compiled 464 yards of total offense compared to Moravia’s 322 despite the Wolves being minus two in the turnover margin.
WMU improves to 2-0 and they have another long road trip Friday to face Iowa Valley (1-1).
