Recently KCII News spoke with Lori Beenan of the Columbus School District, about the Columbus Parliamentary Procedure Team and their trip.

Beenan works as a Business Professionals of America (BPA) advisor in Columbus, which is comparable to a business club. She stated that the team was formed when some students expressed an interest in participating in parliamentary procedure; a procedure involving a rule that defines how a specific situation is to be handled, or a specific outcome achieved, in a legislature or deliberative body.

Individuals in the BPA, can compete at the state and national levels. This is no different for the Parliamentary team, which has competed at state and qualified for nationals for the past two years. The team was eager to learn more, especially since they have to take a large test with a multitude of questions.

Beenan took action by looking for  someone to learn from, which led her to contact with a parliamentarian in Missouri. After everything was in place, she traveled with the now-six-member team to St. Louis, Missouri, for ten hours of training. The training included honing previous skills, learning new ones, and correcting areas where the team might be lacking.

While in St. Louis, the team also visited the famous Arch and got to enjoy the surrounding area.
