Coming into the season ranked 20th in class 3A on both sides, high hopes surround the Washington cross country teams in 2022 and the fall got started with a bang on Saturday at the Anamosa meet.
The packed field saw the Demon boys nab second out of 11 with 75 points to edge No. 6 Solon by nine. Cedar Rapids Kennedy took home the crown with 25 points. Returning state qualifier Micah Rees started his junior campaign with a new PR of 16:53 to capture third place individually and senior teammate Drew Horak cracked the top 15 in 12th with 18:22. Other scored results included Tyler Alderton 16th (18:41), Andrew Rees 18th (18:46), and Lane Schrock 26th (19:17).
The Washington girls also captured a silver finish with 67 points, besting third place Kennedy by 34. No. 1 and defending state champion Solon took home top honors with 39 points. In her first varsity race, freshman Iris Dahl showed out for the Demons by recording the ninth fastest time in school history with 20:45 to place runner-up. Sophomore Quincy Griffis was not far behind placing ninth in 21:32. Lauren Horak placed 14th (22:14), Abigail Kleese was 20th (22:36), and Alyvia Anderson finished 22nd (22:56).
The Demons look to keep the good times rolling Thursday when they compete at the Iowa City Kickers Complex.
