Five area teams were recognized by the Iowa Associated Press in this week’s high school football rankings.
In 8-man football, the WACO Warriors and Winfield-Mt. Union Wolves both found themselves firmly in this week’s top 10. WACO is No. 3 this week after a 2-0 start to the season outscoring Southeast Warren and Springville 99-42. The Warriors host 0-1 HLV this Friday. WMU is No. 6 this week, tied with Gladbrook-Reinbeck with 23 votes in the poll. The Wolves are also 2-0 after beating Audubon and Moravia by a total of 132-86 through the season’s first two weeks. The Wolves visit Marengo to take on 1-1 Iowa Valley Friday.
In Class 3A, the Washington Demons are receiving votes in this week’s poll after a week one win over Burlington at Case Field 21-14. Washington is on the road Friday against 0-1 rival Mount Pleasant. The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks are receiving votes this week in Class 2A after a season opening win at West Burlington Notre Dame Friday 28-18. Mid-Prairie hosts 0-1 Sigourney-Keota on Friday. In Class A the Columbus Wildcats are in the receiving votes column after an opening week dismantling of their rivals from Louisa-Muscatine 55-14. The ‘Cats travel to 0-1 Highland this Friday.
