It’s all Cats and Dogs in an all-KCII area football matchup Friday when the Columbus Wildcats visit the Highland Huskies. Columbus comes into the game with a 1-0 record after a 55-14 blasting of county rival Louisa-Muscatine week 1. The Wildcats are receiving votes in this week’s Class A football poll issued by the Iowa Associated Press. In their win over the Falcons, Columbus accumulated 405 yards of total offense, 383 of that on the ground, led by a seven carry 172 yard night with a touchdown for Triston Miller. Cole Storm and Riley Kaalberg each had a pair of touchdown runs and Jeff Hoback added another. Kaalberg led the Columbus defense with eight and a half tackles. The Wildcats finished with 11 tackles for loss. Two each for Hoback, Russell Coil, Ethan Palmer and Bryce Grimm. They also forced three turnovers with Coil recovering a fumble and grabbing an interception while Coby Frost picked off a pass. Miller also supplied fireworks on special teams, returning a punt for a score.

It was a tough start to the year for Highland who made a long road trip to Winthrop and fell to No. 1 East Buchanan 54-0. While the Huskies offense struggled to get much going in the contest, the Highland defense was led by Tyler Thompson with six tackles. Ethan Simpson had a pair of tackles for loss while Peyton Yeggy added a sack and a tackle for loss. Highland got by Columbus last year 48-20 and have won three of the last four in the series. It’s senior night for the Huskies and they will honor four athletes, Tyler Thompson, Ethan Paisley, Peyton Yeggy and Ethan Simpson. Kickoff is set for 7p.m. Friday at Highland High School.
