More than two years after a wreck that caused the death of his girlfriend, a Fairfield man has been found guilty of voluntary manslaughter in Louisa County District Court. Thirty-six year old Derrick Cook Maynard was charged with voluntary manslaughter, a Class C Felony, in the 2020 death of 29-year-old Megan Marie Reid.

The Iowa State Patrol filed a charge for second degree murder on July 31st, 2021 for an incident that occurred in Columbus Junction. Maynard was driving a 26’ F-650 U-Haul truck and Reid was driving a Chevrolet Cobalt south on 3rd Street at 7:56 p.m. May 18th, 2020 when Reid attempted to make a u-turn and Maynard struck her vehicle. Reid was airlifted to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and later died due to her injuries.

The criminal complaint states that Reid’s mother and the Fairfield Police Department indicated a tumultuous domestic relationship between Reid and Maynard. Data recovered from the U-Haul revealed that the truck’s accelerator pedal was fully depressed immediately prior to impacting Reid’s vehicle, and there was no manual braking applied as the truck struck the Cobalt at about 30 miles per hour. Maynard was arrested August 2nd of 2021.

His sentencing hearing has been set for September 30th.
