The Kalona Area Chamber of Commerce is hosting a Byways Specialty Tour of Country Schoolhouses throughout the month of September. Every Wednesday and Friday from 2-4 p.m., participants will have the opportunity to visit three schoolhouses.
Director of Kalona Area Chamber of Commerce Tonia Poole shares what you can expect to experience on the tour, “You’re going to visit on this tour, three classrooms, three schoolhouses. Two of them are one room schoolhouses that used to even be part of the Mid-Prairie School District way back in the day. And then the third one is a temporary location with the new order Amish classroom. So they’ll explain what their goals are, where they’re going, and you’ll get to see the process of how they run a one room classroom, and hear the history of the buildings and how they transitioned over the years. One of the schools, the Middleburg school, is actually the longest continuous running schoolhouse in Iowa.”
Cost of the tour is $30 for adults and $15 for youth. To register, call the Chamber at 319-656-2660 or email at info@kalonachamber.com.
