If there were any ill effects from losing at the buzzer on a Hail Mary last week for the Clear Creek-Amana football team it didn’t show last night at Case Field when the Clippers took their anger out on Washington to run wild for a 31-6 non-district win.
As heard on KCII, the Demons got behind the eight-ball early when their opening drive was a quick five plays and punt only to have CCA (2-1) march right down the field to score on a Sam Pettinger four yard run. Washington put together their best drive of the day mid way through the second and got on the board with a five yard Tayven Stuart touchdown run, the senior running back’s eighth house call in three games to make it 7-6. The momentum pendulum swung back the Clippers way for good after that with two quick scores generated by dynamic quarterback Jackson Schmidt for a 21-6 halftime advantage. Giving up just 13 points total coming in, the CCA defense was as good as advertised by shutting down the Demon attack in the second half to continue to pull away. Washington struggled for just 120 yards of total offense including 2.2 yards per rush. Stuart carried the rock 15 times for 37 yards and Ethan Patterson completed seven of 16 throws for 51 yards. James Strabala recorded 11.5 tackles for a defense that gave up 363 yards in total. The elusive Schmidt accounted for 217 of their 295 rushing yards with one touchdown on the ground and one through the air. The Clippers were plus one in the turnover margin.
Head Coach of the Demons Nick Ehret tells KCII Sports nothing came easy. “We didn’t start very well on either side of the ball. We had a lot of alignment issues defensively and offensively we couldn’t get the run game going. CCA is a good team and we knew that coming in, but we didn’t handle their physicality very well. There is a lot of things that we can correct for next week so we just need to learn from it.”
Washington falls to 2-1 on the season and they close out non-district play Friday in Fort Madison (3-0).
