Tuesday, a collision was reported to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office. At approximately 7:06 a.m. 63-year-old John Mast,was driving his vehicle eastbound near the intersection of 540th Street SW and Eagle Avenue SW when he collided with a horse-drawn buggy. The buggy was operated by 75-year-old Simon Borkholder, who was traveling in the same direction. Both individuals are residents of Kalona.
The accident occurred when sun glare obstructed Mast’s vision. According to the Sheriff’s Office, Borkholder sustained injuries and was rushed to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, where he remains in stable condition. Mast, as well as the horse pulling the buggy were unharmed in the collision.
In addition to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, assistance was provided by Iowa State Patrol, Johnson County Ambulance Services, Kalona QRS, Washington County Sheriff’s Office, and Johnson County Joint Emergency Communications Center.
