Four KCII Area schools will be part of more than a dozen teams competing at tonight’s Creek Classic cross country meet at the Iowa City Kicker’s Complex.
The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks come into tonight’s event with more than a week between them and their last competition at the Midwest Regional Heartland Classic in Pella on September 17th. At Central College, the No. 2 in Class 2A Mid-Prairie girls were 18th of 31 teams with their score of 143 points, led by Danielle Hostetler’s fifth place finish. Mid-Prairie enters action with two ranked runners in Class 2A according to the poll from the Iowa Association of Track Coaches with Hostetler at No. 1 and Abby Fleming No. 12.
The Mid-Prairie boys are ranked No. 8 in 2A. During their time in Pella last week, they placed 30th of 37 schools with a score of 859, led by Emmett Swartzentruber in 116th. He is the lone ranked individual in the lineup, checking in at No. 10 in 2A.
Columbus will also travel to Iowa City tonight. The Wildcat boys and girls finished as small school division runners-up in their last competition, Thursday in Mount Pleasant. The Columbus boys scored 65 points, led by Damian Vergara in seventh place. The Columbus girls had a team score of 44 with Ariana Vergara taking third.
WACO will be in Iowa City tonight. Their last meet also came at Mount Pleasant last week. The Warrior boys were sixth in the small school team standings with 133 points, led by Isaac Rich in 20th. The Warrior girls did not have a team score with their top runner McKenzie Vradenburg in 14th.
Winfield-Mt. Union rounds out the area quartet in Iowa City tonight. The Wolves were third in the boys small school team standings at Mount Pleasant last week with 76 points and Gabe Hemsworth leading the way in fourth. For the WMU girls they were fourth in the small school race with 101 points and Afton Wilkerson was the leader in 17th.
Joining these four teams tonight are Calamus-Wheatland, Cedar Rapids Xavier, HLV, Louisa-Muscatine, the No. 17 in Class 1A Montezuma boys and their No. 19 in Class 1A girls, South Tama, Vinton Shellsburg and the No. 16 in Class 3A home Clipper boys and their No. 18 in Class 3A girls. Varsity is set for 5p.m. tonight in Iowa City.
