It was a sea of pink in attendance for Mid-Prairie’s volleyball match vs. Wilton Thursday, September 15. While the game itself proved to be compelling, with the Golden Hawks knocking off the Beavers for the first time in seven years, the true magic came from the support for Mid-Prairie teacher, Collette McClellen.

Mid-Prairie hosted their “Dig Pink” Night, an annual fundraiser for cancer awareness. This year’s game held extra meaning, with McClellen in attendance. McClellen, who teaches vocal music at the high school, was diagnosed with breast cancer last spring. Since the announcement, the community has stood behind her while she undergoes treatment.

Despite the treatment, the Mid-Prairie alum continues to teach at the high school, inspiring students as she has done for the last 21 years. The volleyball game was preceded by the National Anthem, sung by McClellen and some of her students. T-shirts reading “Collette Stronger than Cancer” filled the stands as the Golden Hawks swept three straight sets.

Mid-Prairie plans to continue holding fundraisers for McClellen and her family, with a raffle and games planned for the October 14 football game vs. Davis County.
