Infrastructure maintenance is ongoing in the city of Wellman this week. CIT Sewer Solutions of McCallsburg, Iowa has been contacted to perform preventative maintenance by cleaning the city’s sanitary sewer. This work has been scheduled to improve the system’s performance and reduce the chance of future backups and related problems.
Residents are advised that this process causes a vacuum in the sewer and will not affect most homes. However, those with inadequate or partially blocked drain vents may encounter issues. The “P-traps”, the ‘S’ shaped bend in the pipe is drained during this process which can allow sewer gas to enter the home. If you smell a sewer odor, residents are advised to run water to refill the trap. It is also recommended that homeowners put down toilet seats and cover floor drains with materials such as car mats to minimize any possible splash of “P-trap” water in poorly vented homes.
Work is expected to be completed Thursday. Any questions can be directed to the City of Wellman at 319-646-2154 or CIT Sewer Solutions at 515-434-2248.
