For years, the Feed The Kids program has provided Mid-Prairie families with food donations. With the help of volunteers like Matt Freel, the project continues to evolve and grow.
What started as simply putting food in student backpacks has expanded to a program that serves almost 70 families in the Mid-Prairie area. With the help of the Mid-Prairie Transportation Department, they have now begun food deliveries once a month to support families who have trouble picking up the donations.
In addition to helping families in the community, Feed The Kids is offering services within Mid-Prairie Schools as well. This includes snack assistance and help with lunch accounts. An emergency fund has also been put into place, that can help students with non-food costs, such as sports equipment, winter clothing, and toiletries.
While Matt Freel spoke about the project, he stressed that a lot of volunteers deserve recognition as well, adding, “Bob and Jan Brophy and Julie and Derek Gordinier, they’re truly the faces of Feed The Kids for Mid-Prairie and deserve all of that recognition for what it has become. They’re still a huge part in what we’re doing and where we’re going.” Freel also credits Leanne Bender, Tracy Rusch, Shelli Stafford, The Mid-Prairie Foundation, and all other volunteers for the growth of the project.
