In Fairfield elementary schools, milk during snack time is not covered by the district meal service. Jay Thompson and other members of the African Violet Foundation wanted to do something about this.
Through fundraising that began last school year, the foundation has done just that. With over $3,000 dollars raised so far, students at Pence and Washington Elementary Schools in Fairfield have their milk covered through Thanksgiving.
The African Violet Foundation was founded in 2006 with the mission of serving students in Southeast Iowa, and now covers Fairfield, Pekin and Van Buren School Districts. While the milk fundraiser branches out from the foundation’s typical services, which include clothing drives and Christmas gifts for students, this mission remains the same.
As the milk program is turned over to the school district, tax-deductable donations will be accepted through Washington, Pence, or the A.C.T. Building. Just put “milk fund” in the check’s memo line to continue the support.
