Two of the top 8-player football teams in the area collide when the WACO Warriors host the Winfield-Mount Union Wolves tonight. Second-ranked WACO reached 7-0 by knocking off the Lone Tree Lions 42-17. Senior quarterback Isaac Oswald had one of his best passing games of the season last week, as 230 yards and three touchdowns meant he reached the 1,00o-yard mark through the air for the year and brings his touchdown toss total to 15. Senior running back Simeon Reichenbach leads the rushing attack with 743 yards and 16 TDs. Senior Oleh Shtefanchuk has six touchdown catches, while junior Colton Leichty powers the defense with 12 tackles for loss and five sacks. Senior Drew Diers’ 59 tackles are a team high for a Warriors bunch that gives up only 16 points per game.
Winfield-Mount Union has ripped off three straight wins to improve to 5-2, including a 60-0 victory over Tri-County last week. Junior running back Cam Buffington is one yard shy of 1,000 on the ground, piling up over 1,200 total yards from scrimmage and 20 touchdowns. Junior Abram Edwards has also been an impact player, with over 610 yards and 13 TDs total on offense and 10 tackles for loss and six sacks on defense. Buffington is the Wolves’ leading tackler with 64 stops and has also intercepted three passes.
The series has been tight over the last few years, with each team winning three times. WACO won last year’s meeting 47-20 and hopes for more of the same against WMU beginning at 7 this evening.
