The Winfield-Mount Union Wolves punched their ticket to the 8-player football playoffs with authority, defeating English Valleys 71-8 in the regular-season finale Friday. WMU raced out to a 22-0 lead after a quarter of play and never slowed down, leading by 34 at halftime and by 48 through three quarters.

Wolves junior Cam Buffington had a dazzling night. On offense, he ran for a whopping eight touchdowns, finishing with 266 rushing yards on 20 carries. Buffington also led the WMU defense with 14 tackles. Rushing touchdowns by junior Eli Miller and sophomore Lane Genkinger rounded out the scoring, while Miller recovered a fumble and joined fellow junior Carter Loyd in grabbing an interception to limit English Valleys to just 185 yards of total offense.

Winfield-Mount Union closes the regular season at 6-3 by winning four of their final five games. The Wolves nab one of the two at-large bids for the state 8-player postseason, but that means they will travel to take on #1-ranked Don Bosco in Gilbertville this coming Friday night.
