The high school volleyball postseason rolls on tonight as a couple of area teams look to move on to their regional semifinals next week. That includes the WACO Warriors, the number-three seed in Class 1A Region 8. WACO improved to 26-6 with their first-round win over Melcher-Dallas on Monday and has been led by senior setter Grace Coble, who has 110 kills, 544 assists, 52 aces, 172 digs and 26 blocks. The Warriors host North Mahaska in the Region 8 quarterfinals tonight.
The fourth-seeded Winfield-Mount Union Wolves are also at home tonight after they knocked off Twin Cedars on Monday. While senior setter Keely Malone and senior hitters Bradie Buffington and Melina Oepping have been excellent, so too has WMU libero Keetyn Townsley. The senior leads the Wolves with 367 digs and 73 aces. Winfield-Mount Union is 23-9 ahead of facing conference rival Wapello for a spot in the Region 8 semifinals.
The Sigourney Savages are trying to join them there, but they’ll need to win a road match first. Seventh-seeded Sigourney is 23-7 after defeating Seymour on Monday. It was another chance for sophomore Josephine Moore to show her growing prowess, as she moved to 132 kills and team highs of 46 assists and 363 digs. Sigourney will travel to take on Holy Trinity Catholic tonight, the number-nine ranked team in the state in 1A volleyball.
The Highland Huskies will also need a road victory to survive and advance in 1A Region 7. Ffith-seeded Highland had leaned on junior Sarah Burton’s 193 kills and 236 digs, both team highs, to win five of their last eight matches and improve to 13-14. After defeating Tri-County Monday, Highland travels to battle Central City tonight. All region quarterfinal matches are slated to begin at 7 this evening.
