Three KCII area football teams appear in the final Associated Press High School polls of the season issued Monday. The highest ranked team is still the WACO Warriors. Head coach Chad Edeker and the guys check in at No. 2 again this week in the 8-man poll, receiving three of a possible nine first place votes. The Warriors finished a perfect regular season Friday at 9-0 with a 42-10 win over Tri-County. WACO opens the playoffs this week, hosting 4-4 Martensdale St. Marys Friday. The Columbus Wildcats are No. 10 in this week’s Class A poll, after standing at No. 6 a week ago. The ‘Cats saw their seven game win streak to start the season snapped in heartbreaking fashion last week, falling on Senior Night in Columbus Junction to Alburnett 32-31 in overtime in a battle for the district title. Coach Dave Lekwa and Columbus are 7-1 and will look to bounce back this week when they host 5-3 Maquoketa Valley to open the postseason.
The Sigourney-Keota Cobras are still receiving votes in the Class 1A poll. The Snakes have eight votes cast for them, two spots out of the top 10 with Mediapolis 10th with 18 votes. SK closed an unbeaten district season with a win at Van Buren on the Warrior’s Senior Night Friday 69-20. Head Coach Jared Jensen and the Cobras are 6-2 and start the playoffs at the Snake Pit Friday hosting 4-4 Sumner-Fredericksburg.
