The Winfield-Mount Union Wolves continued their postseason volleyball march by defeating Wapello in straight sets in the Class 1A Region 8 quarterfinals last night. WMU had to earn it in each set, but the Wolves still swept their conference rival 25-20, 25-15 and 25-20.
Senior middle hitter Bradie Buffington had a big night at the net, leading the Wolves with 13 kills and three blocks. Senior hitter Melina Oepping also had three blocks and finished with eight kills. Senior setter Keely Malone made her impact felt in all aspects of the game, piling up four kills, 23 assists, two aces and five digs.
Winfield-Mount Union improves to 24-9 and has won five straight matches. The Wolves will need their best efforts to keep that going, as WMU will travel to take on defending state champion and fifth-ranked Burlington Notre Dame in the 1A Region 8 semifinals Monday evening.
