It could not have gone much better for the second-ranked WACO Warriors in their playoff opener, as they cruised past Martensdale-St Marys 57-14 last night in the first round of the 8-man football state postseason. WACO scored on each of its first seven possessions and came away with five interceptions on defense, building a 35-6 lead after a quarter of play and never looking back. Warriors head coach Chad Edeker told KCII Sports it was as close to perfect as you could hope for.

“It went real well,” Edeker said. “I didn’t know how it was going to go, and to put 35 points up in the first quarter, I never would have guessed we would have done that. That was awesome. The defense did a great job. We had three picks in the first quarters and short fields. I don’t know if we had a drive that went more than four plays in the first quarter. We did a great job executing. [The players] were ready to play.”

Senior quarterback Isaac Oswald was the star of the night for the WACO offense, completing five of seven passes for 127 yards and touchdowns and rushing for 68 yards and two more TDs on six carries. Senior running back Simeon Reichenbach scored three times and had one of the interceptions, while senior Mason Miller added a pair of picks to his now state-high eight. Seniors Colton Leichty and Ty Egil combined for three sacks as the Warriors improve to 10-0 for the second straight season. WACO will be back at home next week.
