State championship week is here for high school cross country teams and the Iowa Association of Track Coaches has released it’s final set of rankings for the season.
In Class 3A, the Washington Demon girls are No. 12 this week. Washington was last on their home course for the 3A state qualifier where they punched their ticket to Fort Dodge as a group with a runner-up finish led by Iris Dahl in sixth place. The Washington boys are not ranked as a team in 3A, but do have one ranked individual with Micah Rees checking in at No. 9 this week. The Washington boys saw Rees, who finished second at the Demon’s home state qualifier, and teammate Tyler Alderton make it to state as individuals.
In Class 2A, the Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk girls are ranked No. 2 again this week. The Hawks were state qualifier meet champions at Pella last Thursday. They have a pair of ranked runners in their line-up with Danielle Hostetler still standing at No. 1 and Abby Fleming No. 14. Hostetler claimed the individual title last Thursday in Pella, while Fleming was third. The Golden Hawk boys are not in the team rankings released this week, but they do have one ranked individual with Emmett Swartzentruber No. 21 in Class 2A. He led Mid-Prairie, finishing sixth individually at Pella’s qualifying meet, while the team qualified for state together with a third place finish.
The state championship meet is the next date on the calendar for all of these runners, coming up this weekend at the Lakeside Municipal Golf Course in Fort Dodge. The Mid-Prairie boys and girls will be on the course Friday afternoon. The Demons will compete Saturday morning. Listen to KCII and check out KCIIradio.com for updates through the weekend.
