The second-ranked Grundy Center Spartans rolled to an impressive 41-7 victory over the Columbus Wildcats yesterday. The Spartans raced out to a quick 20-0 first-quarter lead after converting a 3rd and 27 on their opening drive of the game to keep a drive alive that resulted in a touchdown before finishing off the quarter with a short field touchdown after the defense caused a fumble.
Both teams scored touchdowns in the second quarter, with Columbus picking up their only points of the game with just over three minutes to play in the second frame as Jeffery Hoback notched only his second passing touchdown of the season. The second half saw two dominant drives by Grundy Center to seal the win controlling the ball for 17 minutes out of the possible 24 minutes in the second half.
The Grundy Center Spartans are now 10-0 and will move on to the Class A playoffs quarterfinal round, and the Columbus Wildcats season ends at 8-2.
