Friday, the Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk boys and girls cross country teams ran at the Class 2A State Cross Country meets in Fort Dodge in search of history, championships and top performances. The Golden Hawk girls entered the day as the five-time defending Class 2A team state champs, one title away from breaking the all-time record for most consecutive team championships and ranked No. 2 in the state. They would finish fifth in a loaded field Friday, with a score of 157. Van Meter took the team title with a score of 111. One streak that did stay intact belonged to Danielle Hostetler. The Mid-Prairie junior rolled to her third consecutive individual title, and seventh straight for the Hostetler family with her time of 18:41, 20 seconds faster than Katelyn Johnston of Osage. After the race, Hostetler talked about the performance. “Different this year because it’s the best weather I’ve ever had for a state course. It’s pretty amazing. Freshman year it was cold and windy and last year it was pretty windy. It’s a blessing to have such nice weather. My game plan was to go out easy, catch people, and then lengthen my lead and give it all I have. The second mile is key. Its where you decide how much you want it and how bad you want to push yourself.”

Other Golden Hawk girls included Abby Fleming 16th, Phoebe Shetler 44th, Dessa Poll 82nd, Greta Sieren 87th, Tabitha Evans 106th, and Amara Jones 110th. The Mid-Prairie boys finished 13th in a field of 15 with their score of 279. Des Moines Christian won the team title with 75 points. Top finish for the Hawks came from Emmett Swartzentruber in 20th with a time of 17:05. Aaron Fynaardt of Des Moines Christian was the individual winner in 15:50. Other Golden Hawks included Preston Yutzy 41st, Blake Creed 84th, Jesse Stultz 110th, Daniel Rodgers 114th, Nathan Wallington 115th, Jordan Stock 123rd.
