Iowa State University is accepting applications from all High School seniors in Iowa for the Christina Hixson Opportunity Award. This award will be granted to a high school senior from each of Iowa’s counties.  This award is designed to demonstrate Iowa State University’s commitment to the student potential that exists in various ways beyond the measures of class rank or standardized test scores.

The Christina Hixson program provides each recipient with a half-tuition grant (estimated value of more than $18,000 over eight semesters) to be used at Iowa State University. Washington County 4-H and Youth Coordinator Amy Green encourages all eligible 4-Hers to apply for the grant while preparations for the upcoming 4-H schedule begin.

Green talked with KCII Radio about some upcoming events on the 4-H schedule. “We have already celebrated National 4-H week in October, which is all about celebrating the beginning of the next 4-H year. Coming up on December 3rd, we are going to have a project extravaganza day where we’re going to have a bunch of different workshops to try out so that 4-Hers can develop some new skills and possibly walk home with something that they’ve created. On December 17th will be our market beef weigh-in which is always a large project area, and that’s the official start date for that project in the eyes of 4-H.”

The Christina Hixson Opportunity Award application deadline is January 3rd, and it must be submitted with a completed FAFSA. For more information about the award or the upcoming 4-H schedule, contact Amy Green at the Washington Extension and Outreach Office.
