National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) is an annual challenge for aspiring authors to write at least a 50,000-word (165-page) novel in just 30 days. Last year, more than 400,000 people participated in the challenge that was founded in 1999 by a group of writers in the San Francisco Bay area. If a writer reaches the 50,000-word mark and verifies their word count on the organization’s site, they get two paperback copies of their work for free.

To help local residents with this year’s challenge, the Washington Public Library will be opening its ReBook room on the lower level of the library to offer a quiet writing space and snacks for writers. Library Director Cary Ann Siegfried talked with KCII about the library’s first year celebrating NaNoWriMo.

“We’re trying to support local authors, so to celebrate NaNoWriMo, we are opening up our ReBook Room every Monday-Thursday for a writing space from 12:00-6:30 pm. This could also be an opportunity for other writers to meet up with each other as well. This is our first year doing this, and we are looking forward to being able to support local writers here in Washington.”

The library will also be hosting a writers’ workshop on November 12th at 10:00 am that will talk about Biblioboard, a service that can assist writers in creating publication-ready manuscripts. For more information about NaNoWriMo, contact the Washington Public Library.
