The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk girls basketball team started the new season red hot on the road Tuesday in Fairfield, taking out the Trojans 59-42. Mid-Prairie used a pair of quarter-long runs to build a big lead at the break, outscoring the Trojans 14-5 in the first frame and 22-3 in the second period to lead 36-8 at half. In the second half, the teams played even up in the third quarter, with Mid-Prairie leading 49-22 going to the fourth before the two teams benches finished the contest. After the game, Golden Hawk head coach Danny Hershberger talked about his individual standouts and team takeaways, “Amara Jones, her effort out there on defense and her ability to push the ball up the court. She can turn it into a 3-on-1 real quick. Landry Pacha did an excellent job of running the court as well tonight, scoring points in transition and even though she’s undersized as a post defender she did a good job on the boards and forcing tough shots for them. Our decision making on offense is improving as we are getting more and more comfortable on the court. We’re starting to find our roles, spacing and what to look for. Our effort rebounding really stuck out, really helped us.”
Mid-Prairie pounded the glass, ripping down 49 rebounds, holding a +14 mark on the boards. The Hawks finished with 13 steals, 10 assists and four made threes. Amara Jones went for 13 points, six assists and five steals. Landry Pacha just missed a double double with 11 points and nine boards. Jovi Evans had 10 rebounds. With the win, Mid-Prairie is now 1-0 on the year with a road trip to No. 5 Benton Tuesday.
