The Winfield-Mount Union Wolves are off to another strong start in girls’ basketball. Winfield-Mount Union is 3-0 to begin a new season, including a 54-24 victory over New London last Friday. WMU jumped out to a 17-5 lead in the first quarter and, despite slowing down on offense in the second period, the Wolves were never up by less than double-digits the rest of the night.
Senior Bradie Buffington led the Wolf pack with 24 points, nine rebounds, five steals and two blocked shots. Fellow senior Melina Oepping had a triple-double with 11 points, 12 rebounds and a whopping 11 steals. Senior Keetyn Townsley added 11 points, four boards and four more steals as WMU’s harassing defense guided them to victory in their home opener. The Wolves have also beaten Central Lee 57-33 and knocked off Lone Tree 70-29 Tuesday night to start conference play. Winfield-Mount Union will try to get to 4-0 when they host Louisa-Muscatine this coming Tuesday.
