Southeast Iowa Superconference basketball action comes to Riverside tonight when the Hillcrest Academy Ravens travel to meet the Highland Huskies in a doubleheader. The Hillcrest girls are 0-2 on the young season, dropping contests to Tri-County and Columbus. The Ravens are scoring 31 points per game and giving up 50 while shooting 33% from the floor, 33% from long range and 79% at the line to go with 25 rebounds, four assists, eight steals and 25 turnovers per game. Individually, Hillcrest is led by freshman Claire Withrow at 12 points per game. Sophomore Malia Yoder has four rebounds and four steals per night with sophomore Delaney Shaw averaging two assists.
Highland is 1-1 with a win over Keota and a loss to Iowa Valley so far. The Huskies are scoring 47 per game and giving up 36, shooting 41% from the floor, 17% from three and 36% at the line to go with 38 boards, 16 assists, 14 steals and 24 turnovers per game. Individually, junior Sarah Burton is out to a blistering start averaging a double double 20 points and 10 rebounds to go with three blocks, all team highs. Katelyn Waters is posting seven assists per night. Highland has won 22 of the last 24 in the series including four straight with 48-24 and 49-16 victories over the Ravens a season ago.
The boys contest is the kickoff to the season for both teams. The Ravens were 15-7 last year, 12-4 in the Superconference North. Five Ravens were named All-Conference including senior Aiden Krabill, juniors Grant Bender, Jace Rempel and Luke Schrock and freshman Seth Ours. Krabill, Noah Miller and Alex Niemeyer have moved on through graduation. A season ago, Hillcrest scored 50 points per game while giving up 44, shooting 47% from the floor, 33% from three and 65% at the line with 23 boards, 13 assists, eight steals and 13 turnovers per game. Returning leaders include Bender at 18 points and six boards per night and Schrock with three assists and two steals per game.
The Huskies were 4-18 last season, 3-13 in the Superconference. Four senior Huskies were named all-conference including Chase Schultz, Trevor McFarland, Connor Grinstead and Kaige Vonnahme. The Huskies scored 40 points per game, giving up 52 while shooting 36% from the floor, 26% from deep and 52% at the line with 24 boards, five assists, eight steals and 17 turnovers per night. Highland has to replace seven seniors including Schultz, McFarland, Grinstead, Vonnahme, Brenton Bonebake, Jaden Schmidt and Devin Lovetinsky. That group includes the Huskies top six scorers, five rebounders, four assisters and two stealers. Leading returner is Tyler Thompson with two points, two rebounds, one steal and one assist per game last year. Hillcrest has won 25 of the last 32 in the series, including four straight and both contests a season ago by 69-49 and 47-40 scores. Varsity action starts tonight at 6p.m. In Riverside.
