A big date on the calendar turned into a big night on the mat for the Mid-Prairie girls wrestling team Tuesday at Tim Grady Gymnasium in Wellman. It marked the first time the girls program, newly sanctioned by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union, had ever hosted a home duel event, and the Hawks took full advantage, breaking out the brooms on the three opposing teams in front of a partisan crowd.
Mid-Prairie blitzed the Iowa City Liberty Lightning by a 51-10 score. The Hawks got wins in contested matches from Gabi Robertson by fall at 105lbs, Ashlee Farrier by fall at 130, Ellie Brenneman by fall at 135, Grace Conway at 140 by 7-5 decision, Marissa Cline at 145 by fall, Mia Garvey at 170 by fall and Sam Stacey at 235 by fall.
Mid-Prairie handled the Iowa City West Women of Troy 54-6. The Hawks scored wins in contested matches from Kenda Shqair at 125 by fall, Ellie Brenneman at 135 by fall, Grace Conway at 140 by fall, and Mardie Berry at 145 by fall.
The most exciting duel of the night saw the Hawks face down a stiff challenge from River Valley Conference rival West Liberty 36-33. Mid-Prairie had their backs against the wall late, trailing 33-12, only to see Berry at 155, Ellie Callahan at 170, Mia Garvey at 190 and Sam Stacey at 235 run the table with pinfalls to stun the Comets in come-from-behind fashion. Other contested match winners against the Comets included Gabi Robertson with a fall at 110 and Ashlee Farrier with a fall at 125. The Mid-Prairie girls are now 3-0 on the duel season and return to the mat at BGM Friday.
