Each school scored a win in Riverside Tuesday when the Highland Huskies hosted the Hillcrest Academy Ravens for a Southeast Iowa Superconference hoops doubleheader. In the girls contest, Highland came away with a 51-24 win. A fast start for the Huskies proved to be too much for the Ravens to overcome with Highland holding a 22-7 lead after first quarter and using a 12-3 run in the second to go on top 34-10 at the break. Offense slowed down for both sides after half, with the Huskies winning the third frame 9-3 to extend the lead to 30. Highland owned the stat column, grabbing 39 rebounds, 22 steals and dishing out 19 assists. Sarah Burton continued her blistering start to the year with another double double 20 points and 11 boards with four steals and two blocks. Jessica Kraus had 12 points and Katelyn Waters finished with 11 assists. The Huskies improve to 2-1 as the Ravens remain winless.
In the nightcap, the Hillcrest boys rolled to the win in their season opener 71-13. A pair of quarter-long runs for the Ravens put things out of reach early. Hillcrest outscored Highland 18-3 in the first and 24-5 in the second to lead 42-8 at the break. The second half followed the same trend with the Ravens winning the third 11-5 and shutting out the Huskies in the final period while scoring 18. The Hillcrest attack was led by 13 points from Grant Bender on six of 10 shooting with five boards. Seth Ours scored 12, on four three point goals. Josiah Beachy also got to double figures with 10. Luke Schrock had six assists and Mason Bender four steals. All 10 Ravens that dressed saw action and scored. Highland got a team high nine points from Logan Bonebrake. The Ravens are now 1-0 on the year as Highland falls to 0-1.
