The Lone Tree Lions and Columbus Wildcats met up with Super Conference basketball bragging rights on the line, and the result was a pair of one-point thrillers Tuesday that the Lone Tree girls and Columbus boys escaped with victories.

In the girls’ game, Lone Tree held on for a 32-31 win. Despite being down two at the end of the first quarter, Columbus rallied to take a 14-11 lead into halftime and would be up by five entering the fourth quarter. But the Lions would summon what was needed to secure a road victory and improve to 3-2. The Wildcats got nine points, five rebounds and three steals from sophomore Ariana Vergara, and sophomore Aracely Garza added 12 rebounds and three steals of her own, but it was not enough to get the Cats to a 3-0 start to the season.

The boys’ game went Columbus’ way in a 56-55 nail-biter. Lone Tree jumped out to a 16-12 lead after a quarter of play, but the Wildcats turned it around and would lead 27-25 at the half. The Lions roared back to go in front 41-38 heading into the final period, but Columbus made the plays down the stretch to get the win. Senior Oscar Alcala was crucial to the Wildcats’ success with a team-high 17 points and seven rebounds. Junior Tim Hills posted a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds but also had a team-high six assists. Senior Julian Jimenez added 12 points, while senior Grant Watson did a little bit of everything with 11 points, four boards, three dimes, two steals and a blocked shot.

Lone Tree falls to 0-2, while Columbus is now 1-1. Both Wildcat teams will travel to face Louisa-Muscatine tomorrow, while the Lion boys take on Keota tonight before both teams host Highland Friday.
