The Sigourney boys and girls basketball teams hosted Iowa Valley in a South Iowa Cedar League doubleheader Tuesday. The Savages dropped a close girls game 51-44. The Tigers had a big first quarter, holding a 17-10 lead after the first eight minutes but the Savages responded, winning the second frame 15-9, leaving the contest at 26-25 Iowa Valley at the break. The third quarter was a defensive grind with Iowa Valley building a 35-28 lead going to the fourth. The Tigers would withstand a Sigourney offensive push in the final frame as each team put up 16 points. Sigourney shot just 25% from the floor and 16% from downtown. The Savages grabbed 27 rebounds and had 11 steals, but were hampered by 19 turnovers. Carly Goodwin had a game high 18 points and Josephine Moore just missed a double double with 12 points and eight boards. With the loss, Sigourney falls to 0-2.
The boys contest featured huge runs and a tight finish with Sigourney scoring a 50-48 victory. The Savages sprinted through the first eight minutes on a 22-8 run that lasted the entire first period. In the second, Sigourney went cold, going the entire frame without a field goal, scoring just one point while Iowa Valley cut into the deficit, leaving Sigourney with a 23-21 lead at half. The Tigers took the lead in the third, outscoring Sigourney 15-9 to go up 36-32 going to the fourth. The Savages had one run left, and saved it for the final period, outscoring the Tigers 18-12 to claim the victory. Sigourney shot 30% from the floor and hit seven threes. They won the glass by two, grabbed 10 steals and forced 16 Tiger turnovers. Isaac Bruns paced the Savages with 17 points and nine boards. Karson Weber scored 10. Sigourney is now 1-0 on the year. The Sigourney boys and girls are next in action Friday when they travel to Keota.
