A number of area wrestling teams participated in the 58th William Howell Invitational in Wapello Saturday, and the Sigourney-Keota Cobras had the best day by finishing second as a team in the boys’ standings. Senior Jack Clarahan had SK’s top finish by winning the tournament title at 170 pounds. Juniors Reid Molyneux and Jack Moore finished second at 152 and 160, respectively, as did senior DJ Hammes at 145. 106-lbs sophomore Reanah Utterback and 182-lbs freshman Owen Menke both had third-place finishes, while senior Austin Gorsh took fourth at 120. Senior Dan McLaughlin and sophomore Jayden Thompson rounded out the Cobras’ medalists by placing fifth in their respective weight classes.
The Highland Huskies finished ninth as a team, led by third-place finishes for junior Luke Guseman at 120 lbs and senior Carlos Valenzuela at 138. Junior Jack Peiffer was fourth at 152, while 132-lbs freshman Brock Thomann and 106-lbs sophomore Landon Bell both ended up fifth.
Wapello held its first-ever all-girls edition of the William Howell Invitational, with the WACO Warriors earning seventh as a team, Highland finishing eighth and Columbus ending up 13th. Highland senior Mackenzie McFarland won the title at 110 lbs, as did WACO senior Bralyyn Wagler at 235. Huskies junior Abbie Grout finished second at 100 lbs, while sophomore Lilly Barre was third at 125 and junior Angelina Roling was fourth at 115. Warriors senior Grace Fort had to beat her own sophomore teammate, Emma Szewczyk, for the third-place medal at 190, while sophomores Rylee Rice and Elyssa Graber both finished sixth in their respective weight classes. The Columbus Wildcats got a third-place finish from freshman Audrey Hoback at 155 and sixth-place finishes from juniors Dakota Storm and Lecet Quiroz at 140 and 170, respectively.
