With deer season well underway in Iowa, the HUSH program is giving hunters the opportunity to reduce the deer population, while also benefiting the people in their communities.

The Help Us Stop Hunger program is a combined effort between Iowa deer hunters, the Food Bank of Iowa, meat processors, and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. It allows hunters to donate legally-harvested deer to participating lockers, where the meat is processed and divided into two pound packages. Local service agencies then distribute the venison to individuals and families in need.

Zach Haworth, a Park Ranger at Lake Darling State Park adds, “It’s a great opportunity for hunters. Maybe they have enough deer meat for themselves already and they’re just looking for a place to be able to donate it. That’s what this program is there for.”

Last year, 3,191 deer were donated through this program, providing approximately 530,000 meals to the less fortunate. HUSH lockers are located throughout the state, including some in Washington, Iowa, Henry, and Johnson Counties.
