The Hillcrest Academy Raven boys and girls basketball teams entertain the Pekin Panthers Tuesday at Hillcrest Union in Kalona for a Southeast Iowa Superconference doubleheader. The Raven girls come into the night looking for their first victory of the season with an 0-7 record after a 55-13 loss to Winfield-Mt. Union Saturday where Claire Withrow led the way with 10 points. On the season, the Ravens are scoring 22 points per game and giving up 51, shooting 28% from the floor, 26% from three and 62% at the line with 22 rebounds, three assists, five steals and 23 turnovers per game. Individual leaders include Withrow at 10 points per game, Delaney Shaw with seven boards per night and Malia Yoder with three steals and two assists per game.
Pekin is also winless at 0-5 on the season after a 42-30 loss to Columbus last time out. On the year, the Panthers are scoring 35 per game and giving up 59, shooting 24% from the floor, 18% from three and 52% at the line with 33 boards, eight assists, 10 steals and 25 turnovers per night. Individually, the Panthers are paced by Emma Phillips with 11 points and eight boards per game. Brooke Miller leads with two assists and two steals per night. The Panthers have won 25 of the last 26 in the series, including 21 straight, with Hillcrest’s last victory coming in 2010.
The Raven boys are 3-2 on the season and 3-1 in the Superconference after a tough overtime loss Saturday to Winfield-Mt. Union 59-56. For the season, they are scoring 64 per game and giving up 50, shooting 64% from the floor, 49% from three and at the line. The Ravens average 19 rebounds, 15 assists, 13 steals and 11 turnovers per night. Grant Bender leads Hillcrest individually with 21 points and five rebounds per game. Luke Schrock averages a team best four assists and three steals per night.
Pekin stands at 2-2 this year, 2-1 in the Superconference. They were on the wrong end of a 53-36 score last time out against Eddyville-Blakesburg. On the year, the Panthers are scoring 49 per game and giving up 47, shooting 43% from the floor, 26% from three and 64% at the line with 20 rebounds, nine assists, eight steals and eight turnovers per night. Luke Long scores a team best 15 per night with three assists and two steals. Jaedeon Wolver is in double figures at 12 points per night with a team best seven rebounds. The Ravens have won 19 of the last 30 and swept both meetings a season ago by 50-39 and 60-59 scores.
