The Washington Demons had another strong showing on the wrestling mat this weekend, taking seventh out of a 17-team field at the Mount Vernon Invitational Saturday. The Sigourney-Keota Cobras also wrestled at the tournament and finished ninth as a team.
Four of Washington’s six wrestlers medaled, led by junior Chase Greiner taking home the championship at 160 pounds. Greiner pinned his first two opponents before winning decisions by scores of 8-1 and 10-3. Sophomore Aaron Boone was the runner-up at 120 lbs, as after getting a pin and a 14-7 decision, Boone was pinned by Lisbon’s Brandon Paez. Senior Colley Billingsly finished third at 285, bouncing back from losing a 5-1 decision in the semifinals by winning the third-place match by the same score. Senior Curtis Stender rounded out the Demons’ placers by taking fourth at 220.
The top finish for Sigourney-Keota belonged to sophomore Reanah Utterback, who won 6-1 and 7-0 decisions before losing the 106-lbs final in a 10-6 decision. Senior Jack Clarahan was on the wrong end of a 14-5 major decision in the semifinals but bounced back to win third with a 10-8 sudden victory at 170. Junior Reid Molyneux also placed third at 152 by winning a 3-2 tiebreaker and a 7-2 decision. Junior Jake Moore completed the Cobra scoring by earning fourth at 160. While SK has a home quadrangular tonight, Washington will next wrestle Thursday at Keokuk.
