The WACO Warriors continued their undefeated start to the boys’ basketball season with a convincing 78-17 victory Tuesday night over the Highland Huskies. WACO did nearly half of their offensive damage in just the first quarter, taking a commanding 38-5 lead that was more than enough to win. Junior guard Hunter Hughes’ 19 points, seven rebounds and six steals featured some team highs, but it also ended up being a typical line for the Warriors. Colton Leichty put up 12 points, six rebounds and five steals, while sophomore Clayton Miller came off the bench for 11 points, seven boards and seven steals. Cody Graber’s 12 points and five blocked shots and fellow senior Isaac Oswald’s six assists and seven steals rounded out a near-complete performance for the Warriors on their way to improving to 6-0 and keeping the Huskies winless.
The WACO girls also defeated Highland 49-20. Despite Huskies junior Sarah Burton putting up 14 points, the Warriors were up seven after a quarter of play and cruised from there. WACO improves to 5-2 overall and 4-1 in the Super Conference North, while Highland falls to 2-4 overall and 1-3 in conference play. While the Huskies will take on Wapello on Friday, the Warriors will host Hillcrest Academy in a doubleheader you can hear on 102.5 FM and AM 1380 KCII.
