The Winfield-Mount Union Wolves continued their undefeated season and their defensive dominance with a 54-17 victory over the Columbus Wildcats in girls’ basketball last night. WMU led 10-1 at the end of the first quarter and was already up 22 before halftime.
Seniors Keely Malone and Bradie Buffington paced the Wolves’ offense with 12 points each. Keetyn Townsley added 11 points as the number-13-ranked team in Class 1A improves to 9-0. Senior Victoria Howell led the Wildcats with eight points, but Columbus still drops to 3-3 in the Super Conference North and 4-4 overall.
WMU also defeated Columbus 72-18 in the boys’ game. The Wolves caught fire in the second quarter and built a 35-15 halftime lead, thanks largely to hitting almost 49 percent of their shot attempts. Junior Cam Buffington put up a double-double with game highs of 18 points and 11 rebounds, while sophomore Jake Edwards poured in 14 points and Gabriel Hemsworth and Cooper Buffington combined for 18 points off the bench. While Columbus falls to 1-7, WMU is now 5-1. Both Winfield-Mount Union teams next play Tuesday at Highland, while both Wildcat squads host Central Lee Monday.
