The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk girls wrestling team closed the first half of the season Monday with a trip to the Iowa City Liberty Girls Invitational. The Hawks were fourth of 15 teams with 111 points. Southeast Polk won the title with 149 points. Mid-Prairie had two individual champs on the day with Gabi Robertson taking the title at 100lbs after scoring a fall over Wynter Morgan of Marion in the finals, and Sam Stacey reaching the top of the podium at 235 after a pair of pins over Abigail Carr of Liberty. The two Golden Hawk champions spoke this week with KCII sports about their wins.
Stacey said, “My championship (bracket) was very small. It was only two people. I pinned her both rounds.”
Robertson added, “Mine was against a girl from Wapello. I knew she was pretty good. We had beaten some of the same competition. She didn’t come out with the aggression that I thought she was going to. I just took her down and pinned her right away.”
Other top Hawk finishes included a runner-up for Grace Conway at 140 and Mia Garvey at 170, and third place finishes for Ashlee Farrier at 125, Ellie Brenneman at 135 and Marissa Cline at 140. Mid-Prairie is off until a trip to North Scott for tournament action January 7th.
