With the weather becoming increasingly colder, it is important to remember heating safety when it comes to heating your residence. According to the National Fire Protection Association, a vast majority of home heating fire deaths involve stationary or portable space heaters. The recommendation for using space heaters is to make sure that they are not being used with an extension cord and that the heating unit remains upright. KCII News was able to speak with Washington Fire Chief Brendan DeLong about the importance of heating safety this winter.  DeLong states, “We have had two to three fire calls in the last few weeks in relation to wood stoves. So make sure your chimneys are cleaned properly and dispose of the ashes and fire debris from that appropriately.” According to the National Fire Protection Association, Heating equipment is a leading cause of fires in U.S. homes.
