The Southeast Iowa Super Conference features two of the best girls’ basketball players in the state this season, and the numbers bare that out for WACO Warriors senior Ellah Kissell and Highland Huskies junior Sarah Burton.
Kissell has been an offensive machine for WACO, scoring the second-most points in the state in Class 1A so far this season. Kissell has put up 204 points in nine games, second only to senior Audi Crooks’ 285 points for Bishop Garrigan. Kissell’s total is good for an average of 22.7 points per game, third-best in the state. No one in 1A has attempted more field goals than Kissell’s 220, and her 79 made shots are third-most in 1A. Kissell will try to pile up the points again when the 7-2 Warriors host Louisa-Muscatine in their next game Tuesday night.
Burton has proven to be a do-everything player for Highland. Burton is inside 1A’s top 25 in total points, rebounds, steals and blocks. The junior is averaging better than 17 points, 11 rebounds, four steals and two blocks per contest. She’ll look for another outstanding performance as the 3-5 Huskies visit Columbus Tuesday evening.
