There’s been some high-level boys’ basketball played so far this season in the South Iowa Cedar League, especially by area teams like Sigourney and Ketoa. The Eagles might be the best example of that, as they’ve won eight of their first 10 games largely thanks to a high-powered offense and the scoring exploits of guard Sawyer Stout.
The junior is 13th in the state in Class 1A in scoring entering January, averaging 17.2 points per game. Stout has knocked down 68 made shots, 12th-best in 1A, and is shooting 42.5 percent from the field. Keota teammate Aiden McGuire has been extremely effective off the bench, as his 68.2% shooting clip is 12th-best in the state, while Eagles sophomore Billie Kindred has pulled down 88 rebounds, the 13th-most in 1A. Keota will try to keep a strong season rolling when they visit Montezuma tomorrow night.
The Sigourney Savages have leaned on an inside-approach on offense to get to 6-4. Sophomore Isaac Bruns is in 1A’s top 25 with 81 rebounds, while few players pull the trigger from deep like Bruns and senior teammate Karson Weber. Bruns and Weber have combined for 125 three-point attempts, separated by a shot in tenth and 11th place in 1A, respectively. Weber’s 26 made triples is fifth in the state, and 41.9% mark from downtown is top-25 in 1A among seniors. Sigourney returns to action against unbeaten Lynnville-Sully tomorrow evening.
