The second half of the basketball season opens tonight with a hotly anticipated Southeast Iowa Superconference basketball doubleheader between Hillcrest Academy and Winfield-Mt. Union. The Raven boys are 5-2 on the year, 5-1 in the Superconference after handling Wapello 59-46 on Alumni Night December 20th behind 22 points from Seth Ours and 15 from Grant Bender. On the year, the Ravens are scoring 60 points per game and giving up 47, shooting 49% from the floor, ninth in 1A, 37% from three, fifth in 1A and 51% at the line with 23 rebounds, 16 assists, 13 steals and 12 turnovers per game. Individual leaders include Bender with 18 points and six boards per game. Luke Schrock has a team best four assists and three steals per night.

Winfield-Mt. Union is 6-1 overall and in the Superconference after closing the first part of the year with four straight wins including a 69-34 victory over Highland December 20th, led by Andrew Brown’s 17 points, Abram Edwards’ 11 point and 10 rebound double double and 11 points from Cam Buffington. For the year, the Wolves are shooting 43% from the floor, 33% from deep and 53% at the line with 36 rebounds, 17 assists, nine steals and 10 turnovers per game. Individual leaders include Buffington at 17 points, 10 boards and two steals per night, with Jake Edwards at five assists per game. These two played an overtime classic in Kalona December 10th with the Wolves scoring a 59-56 win, with Abram Edwards scoring 22 points with nine boards, Buffington going double double with 17 points and 15 boards, Ours putting up 23, Schrock 16 and Bender 13.

The Winfield-Mt. Union girls are unbeaten on the season at 10-0 overall and 7-0 in the Superconference. They beat Highland to close the first half of the year 57-23. The Wolves are ranked No. 11 in the latest class 1A poll issued by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union. They score 57 per game and give up 24, shooting 43% from the field, fifth in Class 1A, 36% from three, fourth in 1A, and 56% at the line with 29 boards, 13 assists, 11 steals and 13 turnovers per night. Individual leaders include Bradie Buffington with 16 points and nine rebounds per game. Keely Malone with five assists per night and Keetyn Townsley and Melina Oepping with three steals each.

The Hillcrest Academy girls are 0-9 on the year, 0-5 in the Superconference after a 46-13 setback in Kalona against Wapello on Alumni Night to close the first half of the year. The Ravens are scoring 22 points per game and giving up 49, shooting 24% from the floor, 25% from three and 53% at the line with 25 rebounds, three assists, six steals and 26 turnovers per night. Individual leaders include Claire Withrow at 10 points per game, Delaney Shaw five rebounds per night and Malia Yoder two steals and one assist. These two teams met December 10th with the Lady Wolves rolling to a 55-13 win behind Oepping’s 14 point, 10 rebound double double. Withrow had 10 points for the Ravens.
