It was a productive weekend for Winfield-Mount Union Wolves basketball, capped by the WMU boys defeating Holy Trinity Catholic 71-55 Saturday afternoon. Winfield-Mount Union led by eight at the end of the first quarter and would stay in front by 12 going into the final quarter. While the Wolves never pulled away until the end of the game, a phenomenal offensive effort was led by junior Cam Buffngton. The star forward scored a whopping 33 points and helped WMU shoot almost 61 percent from the field. Buffington also had 10 rebounds and four assists, while classmate Abram Edwards added seven points, 10 rebounds and three blocked shots.
Winfield-Mount Union also picked up a conference win on Friday night by knocking off the Lone Tree Lions 58-23. A 19-6 lead after one quarter swelled to a 20-point advantage, and the Wolves never looked back. Buffington finished with 17 points, six rebounds and three steals, while Edwards had 11 points, nine boards, two blocks and three steals as WMU improves to 8-1 in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference North and 9-1 overall.
The Winfield-Mount Union girls got everything started by staying unbeaten and beating Lone Tree 70-29 Friday evening. The Lions hung tough with the 11th-ranked team in Class 1A in the first half, as WMU led by just two after one quarter and 26-19 at the half. But the Wolves turned on the offense in the second half to pull away emphatically. Senior Melina Oepping’s double-double of 20 points and 11 rebounds was a game high, while senior Keely Malone hit five three-pointers as part of her 17 points and senior Keetyn Townsley put up 12 points, five assists and five steals. The 12-0 Winfield-Mount Union girls will join the Wolf boys in Mediapolis for a doubleheader tonight, with the girls’ game pitting a pair of top-13 teams against each other.
