The Sigourney Savages settled for a split in a home basketball doubleheader with Pekin on Saturday night. The Sigourney girls were victorious, turning a 13-3 lead at the end of the first quarter into a 20-point advantage at halftime. The Savages added on for a final of 58-13, leaning on a big game from junior Carly Goodwin, who had game highs of 18 points, five rebounds, three assists and six steals. Sophomore Josephine Moore added 11 points and five rebounds, while classmate McKinley Chittick had her biggest game of the season by posting 10 points and four boards off the bench to help Sigourney improve to 7-6.

The Sigourney boys ended up dropping a close game 56-49 at home to Pekin. The Savages led 16-6 in the opening period and were in front at the half, but Pekin whittled the lead down all the way to just one going into the fourth quarter, and the Savages couldn’t stop the Panthers from completing the comeback. Sigourney sophomore Isaac Bruns had a big night, hitting three three-pointers and posting game highs with 20 points and eight rebounds, and senior Clay Morse controlled the low post with 12 points and six boards, but it wasn’t enough to keep the Savages from falling to 7-6. Both Sigourney teams return to action this evening against BGM.
