The Highland Huskies split a doubleheader Monday evening, with the Husky girls rallying in the second half to defeat conference rival Pekin 43-41. Highland led a low-scoring first quarter 5-1, but Pekin flipped the game on its head and would lead 19-12 at halftime. The Huskies got the deficit down to two points heading into the final period and outscored the Panthers 18-14 in the highest-scoring quarter of the night to secure the victory.
On a night where junior star Sarah Burton’s scoring was held in check, her Highland teammates were able to come up with some clutch shots. Junior Kylie Allen knocked down three three-pointers and scored a team-high 11 points. Sophomore Katie Herrig also hit a trio of triples and finished with nine points, four rebounds and two assists. Junior Stella Slaymaker added eight points, four rebounds and two steals, while Burton still affected the game with 13 boards, six steals and four blocked shots to help the Huskies improve to 3-5 in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference North and 4-7 overall.
After their first win of the season last Thursday, the Highland boys were unable to add to that momentum Monday night. The Huskies trailed 17-6 after one quarter and were down 25 at halftime en route to a 63-17 loss. Sophomore Logan McFarland had a solid night with seven points, six rebounds and three steals, but Highland still dropped to 0-7 in conference play and 1-9 overall.
