It’s a Southeast Iowa Superconference boy/girl hoops doubleheader tonight when the WACO Warriors travel to Kalona to meet the Hillcrest Academy Ravens. The WACO girls are 10-2 overall, 7-1 in the Superconference after pounding New London Monday in Wayland 70-39. On the season, the Warriors are scoring 54 points per game and giving up 32, shooting 43% from the floor, 17% from three and 59% at the line with 28 boards, eight assists, nine steals and 10 turnovers per game. Individual leaders include Ellah Kissell at 22 points, third in 1A, seven boards, three steals and two assists per night. Grace Coble is also averaging double figures at 10 per game.

Hillcrest is 0-12 this year, 0-8 in conference play after a 56-37 loss to Highland in Kalona Tuesday, despite their season high team offensive output, led by 18 points from Claire Withrow. On the season, the Ravens score 21 points per game and give up 50, shooting 22% from the floor, 22% from three and 49% at the line with 27 boards, three assists, six steals and 26 turnovers per game. Individual leaders include Withrow at 10 points per night, Delaney Shaw six boards per game and Malia Yoder with two steals and two assists per outing. The Warriors have won 16 of the last 20 in the series including eight in a row, with their last meeting, a 58-38 WACO win in 2018.

The Warrior boys are an unbeaten 11-0 overall and 7-0 in the Superconference. The Warriors are ranked No. 3 in Class 1A in the latest Associated Press poll and No. 4 in this week’s 1A poll from the Iowa High School Athletic Association. WACO was a 68-64 winner over New London Monday with Simeon Reichenbach scoring 19, Hunter Hughes 16, Odee Shtefanchuk 14 and Colton Leichty going double double with 11 points and 12 boards. The Warriors score 70 points per game, eighth most in 1A, and give up 36, shooting 48% from the floor, 10th in 1A, 37% from three, third in 1A, and 59% at the line to go with 41 rebounds, sixth in 1A, 19 assists, eighth in 1A, 16 steals, fourth in 1A, and 13 turnovers per game. Individually, Hughes paces the team with 19 points, four assists and four steals per game, eighth in 1A. Cody Graber averages a team best seven boards and four blocked shots per night, sixth most.

Hillcrest Academy is 7-4 this year, 7-2 in the Superconference after handling Highland Tuesday 67-13 behind 21 points from Grant Bender and 10 each from Bryce Bailey and Luke Schrock. This year, the Ravens are scoring 59 points per game and giving up 44, shooting 52% from the floor, third in 1A, 41% from three, best in 1A and 50% at the line with 20 rebounds, 13 assists, 11 steals and nine turnovers per game. Individual leaders include 18 points and five boards per night for Bender with Luke Schrock at four assists and three steals per game. Hillcrest has won 21 of the last 23 in the series, with the Warriors breaking an 18-game losing streak to the Ravens last year with a 60-22 win.
